Why Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy (also known as Aquatic Physiotherapy) is the treatment of a wide range of conditions in a heated pool environment.

It utilises the warmth to relax muscles; the buoyancy to assist or resist movement; and the weightlessness to decrease pain and decrease stress on joints of the water.

You do not need to be able to swim to benefit from Hydrotherapy. Your head does not go under the water. People with poor water confidence can also benefit as the pool is only 1.2m deep and your feet can remain firmly on the ground.

Which Conditions Benefit?

Orthopaedic conditions (especially after surgery)

Immobility following fracture healing

Spinal surgery

Spinal Conditions

  • Acute or chronic back and neck pain
  • Poor trunk stability (ie muscle weakness in pelvis and spine)

Arthritic Conditions

  • Osteoarthritis and rheumotoid arthritis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis

Obstetric Conditions
Call Physical Healthcare and ask for a consultation with a physiotherapist. Initially you will be reviewed on land (30 minutes) and we will discuss your individual requirements and hydrotherapy program. Each session of hydrotherapy generally lasts 30 minutes.. (remember to allow time for showering and drying off). Normally you have one Hydrotherapy session per week, but this will depend upon individual circumstances. Hydrotherapy is usually used in combination with your ‘land’ physiotherapy.
